Western Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions

What can I load in my vehicle?

Personal effects are allowed, but the Carrier accepts no liability for such goods. Factory installed equipment will be considered as part of the basic vehicle and will not be subject to this liability waiver.

Personal effects are not permitted in the front seat or on the floor behind the driver's seat. 360 degree visibility is required. Personal effects are not permitted on roof or racks unless loaded to a car-top carrier designed specifically for such use.

The following may NOT be shipped in your vehicle: hazardous materials, items of extraordinary value, goods shipped for sale or speculation, or firearms.

Is there a weight limit?

Vehicles may not exceed the maximum legal gross weight as specified by the manufacturer. Vehicles will be inspected prior to Alaska Marine Lines accepting receipt of the vehicle to verify the published legal gross vehicle weight. If your vehicle exceeds the legal gross vehicle weight, you may opt to either remove cargo from the vehicle to lower its weight or proceed to warehouse receiving for the transfer of excess cargo weight to pallets. Cargo transferred from the vehicle to pallets will be billed as less than container load (LCL) cargo at the appropriate commodity rates as listed in the tariff. The gross vehicle weight can typically be found stamped on the inside of the driver door jamb.

How much gas can I have in the tank?

The vehicle needs to be delivered to us with less than 1/4 tank of fuel. This is a U.S. Coast Guard regulation. If the vehicle contains more than 1/4 tank of fuel, a fuel drainage fee will be added to your freight bill.

When and how do I pay?

Vehicle shipments must be prepaid in full at the time the vehicle is dropped off, unless credit has been established in writing with Alaska Marine Lines. Alaska Marine Lines accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, personal check and cash.

What is the vehicle inspection procedure?

Alaska Marine Lines will inspect your vehicle when it arrives at the terminal. Any scratches, dents, chips, tears, broken pieces, etc., will be noted on the inspection form. Please be prepared to wait while we inspect your vehicle. You will be given a copy of the inspection report for your records.

Do you accept inoperable vehicles?

We accept inoperable vehicles, but there is an addition charge at origin and destination for loading and off-loading of the vehicle.

What do I need to bring with me when I drop the vehicle off?

Please make a booking with our Customer Service department prior to dropping the vehicle off.

What Required Documentation do I need to bring?

  • A certificate of ownership of the vehicle and a current registration which shows the shipper is the legal owner of the vehicle, or, if not the legal owner:
    • A current vehicle registration showing the shipper to be the registered owner of the vehicle and, in addition, a written consent from the legal owner of the vehicle (usually the lien holder) that authorizes the registered owner to ship the vehicle to a Hawaiian outer island or from Hawaii to the mainland.
  • A valid picture I.D. of some form to identify the person tendering the vehicle as either the legal or registered owner. If the person delivering the vehicle to Alaska Marine Lines is not the documented owner (legal or registered) of the vehicle, then a notarized form or letter from the legal owner that names the person who is delivering the vehicle as his/her agent must also be presented. See Attachment A for an example. This would be important when a vehicle carrier, or perhaps a used car dealer is delivering the vehicle and the owner is not present.
  • For any vehicle being moved to or from an outer island, proof of motor vehicle insurance in place for the vehicle.
