Yard to Driver Apprenticeship Program

Start your career in the transportation industry as early as 18 years old with Alaska West Express’ paid Yard to Driver Apprenticeship Program in Fairbanks, Alaska. This program combines hands-on work experience, accredited in-house training, and one-on-one mentorship to help you earn your Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and transition confidently into a professional driving role.

Participants are first hired as freight operators and begin by working in our yard. Once accepted into the apprenticeship program they are enrolled in our accredited in-house driving school. This approach provides valuable, real-world experience and allows participants to become familiar with our operations before getting behind the wheel.

Each apprentice is paired with a dedicated mentor who provides guidance throughout the program. Upon completion, apprentices acquire their CDL Class A license and are ready to drive for Lynden with minimal additional training. Any additional training takes place on the job alongside our driver trainers or senior drivers, ensuring a smooth and confident transition into a full driver role.

Through a combination of mentorship, structured classroom instruction, and on-the-job training, we foster an environment that supports long-term career growth and professional development. By the time you complete the program, you’ll have practical, job-ready experience in addition to your Class A CDL.
