Our Transportation Mechanic Apprenticeship Program is a Registered Apprenticeship through the U.S. Department of Labor, combining structured classroom instruction with real-world, hands-on experience. As a hybrid program, apprentices build technical knowledge in the classroom while completing a defined number of on-the-job learning hours under the guidance of a dedicated mentor assigned from day one.

Candidates are first hired into a Mechanic Assistant role before they can apply to the apprenticeship program. Once accepted into the Mechanic Apprenticeship Program, each apprentice receives a toolbox and all required tools at the start of training. Throughout the program, participants develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the transportation industry while earning a paycheck.

The apprenticeship program takes approximately 2.5 years to complete and individuals who complete the program receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor as well as a Diesel Technology Certificate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This Department of Labor certification, along with additional industry‑recognized credentials, positions graduates for long‑term career growth and advancement. Additionally, apprentices who successfully complete the program and remain employed with Alaska West Express for at least one year after completion can keep their toolbox and tools as part of our investment in their long‑term success.
