Ice forms in the Bering Sea and along the coast of Western Alaska in October each year, and marine navigation to these communities is impossible until May. Consequently, supplying major construction projects as well as shipment of general commodities to these towns must be completed during the short summer window. We call on the major hub ports of Naknek, Dillingham, Nome, Bethel and Kotzebue, and more than 65 small villages. Freight consists of building and construction materials, heavy equipment and vehicles, grocery items, and fishing supplies.
We have established ourselves as the preeminent supply line for Western Alaska's fisheries. For a few weeks each year, Bristol Bay is home to one of the largest salmon fisheries in the world and Alaska Marine Lines is at the heart of this frantic 'round-the-clock' harvest. Virtually everything the industry needs arrives on our barges. And a major share of the catch makes its first journey toward world markets the same way.
