Don Werhonig

Lead Instructor / HSSE Manager

Don has been with Alaska West Express since November of 2013 working as a HSSE Specialist, HSSE Manager and the Lead Instructor for the Lynden Training Center. He has over 20 years of experience as an emergency responder ranging from his time spent in the U. S. Army to the oil industry. Don’s emergency response experience includes Hazardous Materials Technician, Incident Command, Confined Space Rescue Technician, High Angle Rescue Technician, emergency medical services, structural collapse, trench rescue and firefighting.

Don holds several certifications such as Fire Instructor II, Emergency MT Instructor, and Wilderness EMT. Don also completed a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) program with the Wilderness Medical Society. He is the Assistant Chief of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazardous Materials Response Team, as well as a member of the State of Alaska Hazardous Materials Working Group. He chairs the Alaska Fire Standards Council Rescue Committee. Don teaches across Alaska for Lynden Training Center, the UAF Fire Science Program and worldwide for the U. S. Army. Don has responded to a diverse group of incidents during his career and has performed many incident command functions.
