Aniak Airport Runway Shift

Location: Aniak, Alaska
Project Dates: 2017-2021
Owner: State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities
Contract Amount: $40,000,000
Status: Complete

Project Details: Knik crews mined, hauled, and placed over 1.4 million tons of aggregates constructing an entirely new runway alignment that was shifted away from the community of Aniak. This shift allowed the airport to comply with updated safety standards, particularly increasing the amount of runway safety area. This scope of work also included nearly 100 acres of clearing, a new runway lighting system, local utility infrastructure upgrades, multiple airport road improvements, FAA navigational aide support and improvements, and roughly 40,000 tons of hot mix asphalt pavement manufactured and installed throughout the airport.

Knik leaned heavily on the local Aniak labor force to complete this large multi–season project. Training and workforce development partnerships with The Kuskokwim Corporation and Calista Corporation proved to be mutually beneficial.
