Eareckson Airfield Repair

Location: Shemya Island, Alaska
Project Dates: 2010-2012
Owner: United States Air Force / Prime Contractor: Earth Tech/AECOM
Contract Amount: $35,902,427
Status: Complete

Project Details: This project required milling over 285,000 square yards of existing airfield pavement then producing and placing over 36,000 tons of hot mix asphalt. A portable asphalt plant, a fleet of laydown equipment, and over 50,000 tons of crushed aggregate was barged to the island of Shemya. This project also included the import of a concrete plant which produced over 1,000 cubic yard of Portland Cement concrete.

Knik profiled the existing runway asphalt utilizing new “Topcon MMGPS” technology on our RoadTec Cold Planer to meet the tight project specifications. This technology used GPS automatic machine control paired with ground laser elevation correction to obtain 0.02’ tolerances. Once existing asphalt was profiled to the designed slopes and elevations, the crew overlaid a two-inch-thick lift of asphalt pavement. Work also included excavation, backfilling, and the production of concrete to replace 40 aircraft tie-downs and various concrete work to support in pavement lighting.
