Tyler Bones, FAWM - Training Director / Director of Health, Safety, Security & Environmental

Tyler has been with Alaska West Express, Inc. since February 2012. He has over 27 years of experience in emergency response including municipal fire fighter, specialized rescue technician (rope, confined space, ice, water), industrial firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, Wilderness EMT, hazardous materials technician, State of Alaska Fire Service Instructor Level II, and various incident command functions. Tyler has over 26 years of oil & gas industry and transportation experience that includes process safety management, industrial hygiene, facility security, incident management and response, compliance auditing, incident/accident investigation, environmental compliance, DOT compliance, and risk management. He has held such roles as Health & Safety Specialist, Fire Chief, Facility Security Coordinator, Safety Supervisor, EHS Department Manager, and Director of HSSE Compliance. He is the Chief of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team, a founding member of the Statewide Hazardous Materials Working Group, a member of the Local Emergency Planning Committee, a commissioner for the FNSB Emergency Response Commission, the State of Alaska TRANSCAER Coordinator, and is the Alaska Fire Standards Councils Hazardous Materials Committee Chair. Tyler has participated in the development of international training curricula for Jones & Bartlett and IFSTA. Curricula projects include Industrial Fire Brigade, Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness and Operations, and Hazardous Materials Technician. He has been employed since 1996 as an Adjunct Instructor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Emergency Services Program, developing and instructing courses in fire protection, hazardous materials response, and firefighter safety. He also serves as an advisory council member for the UAF CTC Fire Science program. In 2020, Tyler completed his Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) through the Wilderness Medical Society. Tyler is an active member of the International Technical Rescue Association (ITRA) and is qualified through them to instruct Level 1 & 2 Rope Rescue and 1, 2 & 3 Confined Space Rescue. Tyler holds degrees in Municipal Fire Control and Hazardous Materials Control from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Don Werhonig, FAWM - Lead Instructor / HSSE Manager

Don has been with Alaska West Express, Inc. since Nov of 2013 working as a HSSE Specialist, HSSE Manager, and the Lead Instructor for the Lynden Training Center. Don has over 20 years of experience as an emergency responder ranging from his time spent in the US Army to the petro-chemical industry. Don's emergency response experience includes hazardous materials technician, incident command, confined space rescue technician, high angle rescue technician, emergency medical services, structural collapse, trench rescue, and firefighting.

Don holds several certifications such as Fire Instructor II, EMT, and Wilderness EMT. His heart lies with wilderness medical services and loves working as a wilderness EMT. Don also completed a fellowship program with the Wilderness Medical Society. Currently, Don is the Assistant Chief of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazardous Materials Response Team, as well as a member of the State of Alaska Hazardous Materials Working Group. Don is currently the Alaska Fire Standards Council Rescue Committee Chair. Don's love of emergency services is expressed when he is teaching across Alaska for Lynden Training Center, teaching for the UAF Fire Science Program, or travelling the world teaching for the United States Army. Don has responded to a diverse group of incidents during his career and has worked many incident command functions. In his time off, Don loves to spend time in the great Alaska outdoors with his family.

Taylor Elbert - Instructor / HSSE Specialist

Taylor has been with Alaska West Express, Inc. since November 2020 working as a HSSE Specialist and Instructor for the Lynden Training Center. Taylor has 10 years of experience in occupational health and safety, and commercial vehicle operations, including transportation of hazardous materials. Taylor has 7 years of experience both as an emergency responder and as an instructor. Taylor has served within several emergency response organizations during that time, to include the North Slope Borough (NSB), HazMat Spill Response Team, NSB Office of Emergency Management, NSB Local Emergency Planning Committee, Barrow Volunteer Fire Department, and the NSB Fire Department. He has instructor experience through the Driver's Education, Heavy Truck Operations, Municipal Fire Control, and Emergency Medical Services programs at Ilisagvik College, the North Slope Borough (NSB) Occupational Safety program, as well as the NSB Fire Department Training Division.

Taylor's licenses and certifications include: State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License, Basic Life Support, State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician-III, Firefighter-II, Fire Investigator, Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Service Instructor-I, Basic Life Support Instructor, and Emergency Trauma Technician Instructor. Taylor is family orientated and enjoys spending his off time teaching and being silly with his young family.

Bradley Kurtz - HSSE Technician

Brad has been with Alaska West Express Inc. since September of 2019 working as an HSSE Technician, Assistant Instructor, and Inventory & Logistics coordinator for the Lynden Training Center. Brad has 11 years of experience in logistics and as an emergency responder with his time spent in the U.S. Army and Alaska West Express. Brad's experience includes Hazardous Materials Technician, Confined Space Rescue Technician, Firefighter I & II, Fire Service Instructor Level I, First/Aid CPR, and Wilderness First Responder. Brad is a member of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team, Ester Volunteer Fire Department, a Teaching Assistant with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and an Alaska National Guardsmen.

Al Guettinger - Manager

Al has been with Alaska West Express, Inc. since September 1990 and the Lynden Training Center since August 2002. Al works for Lynden Oilfield Services in Prudhoe Bay when he is not instructing. He has over 30 years commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driving experience as well as 20 years in logistics operations. Al is a member of Alaska West Emergency Response Team and is responsible to respond to hazardous materials in transportation via highway, rail and vessel. He is a Team leader for emergency response to highway cargo tank and rail tank car incidents and confined space rescue operations. He is an instructor for powered industrial trucks, commercial motor vehicle operations, hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, NSTC, and hazardous materials emergency response.

James K. Maltby - Instructor

Jim has been an instructor for the Lynden Training Center since the day it opened in 1995. His background includes 9 years with the United States Air Force as a Crash/Fire/Rescue (CFR) Specialist and Fire Inspector. In addition to his years as a firefighter, his background includes 20+ years experience instructing hazardous materials emergency response, highway and railroad emergency response specialist, hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, ICAO/IATA (air) and IMDG (water) for the Lynden Training Center. Jim is the Director of HSSE for Lynden Inc., he is the past Chief of the FNSB HMRT, an active member of the American Trucking Association, and has been an active member of the Local Planning Commission and State of Alaska State Emergency Response Commission.

Brandon Doherty - Associate Instructor

Brandon is an active member of the Fort Wainwright Fire Department, Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazardous Materials Response Team, and Ester Volunteer Fire Department. He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant on the FNSB HazMat Team, Captain with the Ester VFD, and Captain with the Fort Wainwright Fire Department. He has his degrees in Municipal Fire Control and Hazardous Materials Control from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Brandon has worked for Lynden Training Center since 2008.

Myles L. TenBroeck - Associate Instructor

Myles background includes involvement with the compressed gas industry since 1996. He has successfully managed two DOT Licensed Hydrostatic testing facilities. Along with these facilities he has been teaching compressed gas cylinder safety training for Professional Cylinder Inspectors (PCI) since 2008. In addition to this, his background includes 7 years involvement with the Army National Guard's 103rd Civil Support Team (CST) - WMD where he served as the Operations officer and Deputy Commander. The 103rd CST is one of 53 federally organized HAZMAT Teams. While on the 103rd CST, he was a member of the State of Alaska HAZMAT working group, Joint Terrorism Task Force, and multiple statewide exercise planning committees. His certifications include Hazardous Materials Technician, a bachelor's degree in Emergency Management (University of Alaska), and a master's degree in Management (University of Texas). Myles has been with the Lynden Training Center since 2014.

Michael Carruthers - Associate Instructor

Mike is a recently retired Air Force Fire Fighter with 22 years in Emergency Services and Emergency Management working with and coordinating between DoD, Federal, State, Local, Tribal and public sector entities. 17 of those years as a Hazardous Materials Technician and Incident Commander both operationally and as an Instructor including 8 years specializing in WMD response, training and administration. His early years were spent filling all positions on both medium/light duty rescue and Engine Companies and 5 years as House Captain of Airport and Structural Fire Stations. He is an Iowa born Alaskan who arrived in Anchorage in 1997 with his wonderful bride of now 20 years and their daughter Ashley. Mike has been with the Lynden Training Center 2014.

Fred Austin - Associate Instructor

Fred has been working for Lynden over 40 years as a professional truck driver and pilot car operator. He has been an instructor for the Lynden Training Center since 2006. Fred brings his professional operator experience to the Lynden Training Center's equipment operator courses.
