Tyler Bones Training Director / Health, Safety, Security, & Environmental Manager

Tyler has been with Alaska West Express Inc. since February 2012. He has over 20 years of experience in emergency response including municipal fire fighter, specialized rescue technician, industrial firefighter, emergency medical technician, hazardous materials technician, State of Alaska Fire Service Instructor Level II, and various incident command functions. Tyler has over 17 years of petroleum refining experience that includes process safety management, industrial hygiene, facility security, incident management and response, auditing and incident/accident investigation. He held such roles as Health & Safety Specialist, Fire Chief, Security Coordinator, Safety Supervisor, and EHS Department Manager. He is the Chief of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team, member of the Statewide Hazardous Materials Working Group, member of the Local Emergency Planning Commission, and was a commissioner for the FNSB Emergency Response Commission. He has been employed since 1996 as an Adjunct Instructor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Emergency Services Program, developing and instructing courses in fire protection and hazardous materials response. Tyler holds a degree in Municipal Fire Control and Hazardous Materials Control from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Don Werhonig Lead Instructor / HSSE Specialist

Don has been with Alaska West Express since Nov of 2013 working as a HSSE Specialist and the Lead Instructor for the Lynden Training Center. Don has 20 years of experience as an emergency responder ranging from his time spent in the US Army to the petro-chemical industry. Don's emergency response experience includes hazardous materials technician, incident command, confined space rescue technician, high angle rescue technician, emergency medical services, structural collapse, trench rescue, and firefighting. He has held several positions within emergency response organizations to include fire chief, training officer, and medical coordinator. Currently Don is the Assistant Chief of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazardous Materials Response Team, member of the Fairbanks Emergency Planning Committee, State of Alaska Fire Service Instructor, and a member of the local ASSE chapter. He also works as an instructor for the University of Alaska Fairbanks teaching various classes for the Emergency Services program. Don's experience also includes workplace health and safety, industrial hygiene, accident / incident investigation, and emergency response with a strong background in confined space, fall protection, and HAZWOPER. Don has responded to a diverse group of incidents and has worked many incident command functions to include incident commander, safety officer, and operations section chief. In his time off, Don loves to spend time in the great Alaska outdoors with his family.

Al Guettinger - Manager

Al has been with Alaska West Express Inc. since September 1990 and the Lynden Training Center since August 2002. Al is a Service Center Manager for Lynden Oilfield Services in Prudhoe Bay. He has over 30 years commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driving experience as well as 20 years in logistics operations. Al is a member of Alaska West Emergency Response Team and is responsible to respond to hazardous materials in transportation via highway, rail and vessel. He is a Team leader for emergency response to highway cargo tank and rail tank car incidents and confined space rescue operations. He is an instructor for powered industrial trucks, commercial motor vehicle operations, hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, NSTC, and hazardous materials emergency response.

Alan Hoza - HSSE Specialist

Alan has been with Alaska West Express Inc. since November of 2006. He has over twenty years in the transportation industry. He has nine years' experience in oil refinery procurement and logistics, as a member of a project engineering team for projects of up to $70M. He is a member of the Alaska West Emergency Response Team and is responsible for responding to hazardous materials in transportation via highway and rail. He is an instructor for powered industrial trucks, commercial motor vehicle operations, hazardous materials emergency response specialized programs, and the North Slope Training Co- operative. Alan has customized specialty training programs such as cargo securement, commercial motor vehicle operations, trailer towing operations, hours of service and defensive driving.

James K. Maltby - Instructor

Jim has been an instructor for the Lynden Training Center since the day it opened in 1995. His background includes 9 years with the United States Air Force as a Crash/Fire/Rescue (CFR) Specialist and Fire Inspector. In addition to his years as a firefighter, his background includes 20+ years experience instructing hazardous materials emergency response, highway and railroad emergency response specialist, hazardous materials transportation utilizing 49 CFR, ICAO/IATA (air) and IMDG (water) for the Lynden Training Center. Jim is the Director of HSSE for Lynden Inc., he is the past Chief of the FNSB HMRT, an active member of the American Trucking Association, and has been an active member of the Local Planning Commission and State of Alaska State Emergency Response Commission.

Thomas Richardson - Associate Instructor

Tom has been with the Lynden Training Center since September 2009 and brings over 20 years of experience from the environmental consulting industry and construction health and safety arena possessing a broad technical and business background. He has over 10-years' experience in emergency response as a fire fighter and hazardous materials technician. Tom is currently a Captain for the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Hazardous Materials Response Team. As an instructor, attendance at the National Fire Academy and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office for Domestic Preparedness courses have strengthened his teaching techniques in the areas of Hazardous Materials Chemistry, Incident Safety Officer, NIMS based Incident Command courses, WMD Radiological/Nuclear Awareness Course, Public Safety WMD Response--Sampling Techniques and Guidelines for HazMat Technicians courses. Tom holds a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from Texas Tech University and served in the U.S. Navy.

Brandon Doherty Associate Instructor

Brandon is an active member of the Fort Wainwright Fire Department, Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazardous Materials Response Team, and Ester Volunteer Fire Department. He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant on the FNSB HazMat Team and Captain with the Ester VFD. He has his degrees in Municipal Fire Control and Hazardous Materials Control from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Brandon has worked for Lynden Training Center since 2008.

Myles L. TenBroeck Associate Instructor

Myles background includes involvement with the compressed gas industry since 1996. He has successfully managed two DOT Licensed Hydrostatic testing facilities. Along with these facilities he has been teaching compressed gas cylinder safety training for Professional Cylinder Inspectors (PCI) since 2008. In addition to this, his background includes 7 years involvement with the Army National Guard's 103rd Civil Support Team (CST) WMD where he served as the Operations officer and Deputy Commander. The 103rd CST is one of 53 federally organized HAZMAT Teams. While on the 103rd CST, he was a member of the State of Alaska HAZMAT working group, Joint Terrorism Task Force, and multiple statewide exercise planning committees. His certifications include Hazardous Materials Technician, a bachelor's degree in Emergency Management (University of Alaska), and a master's degree in Management (University of Texas). Myles has been with the Lynden Training Center since 2014.

Michael Carruthers Associate Instructor

Mike is a recently retired Air Force Fire Fighter with 22 years in Emergency Services and Emergency Management working with and coordinating between DoD, Federal, State, Local, Tribal and public sector entities. 17 of those years as a Hazardous Materials Technician and Incident Commander both operationally and as an Instructor including 8 years specializing in WMD response, training and administration. His early years were spent filling all positions on both medium/light duty rescue and Engine Companies and 5 years as House Captain of Airport and Structural Fire Stations. He is an Iowa born Alaskan who arrived in Anchorage in 1997 with his wonderful bride of now 20 years and their daughter Ashley. Mike has been with the Lynden Training Center 2014.

Loren C. {Bud} Rotroff Associate Instructor

Started fire service career in 1957, with California Division of Forestry. Worked for US Forest Service on the Sierra, Sequoia, Los Padres National Forests in a variety of fire protection positions and at Redding, California, as a Smokejumper. Employed with the U.S. Air Force October, 1970. Served as a company officer, fire prevention technician, assistant fire chief, Chief of Fire Protection of the Alaskan Air Command, and for 13 years as Fire Chief at Eielson AFB, AK. Retired from federal service May 1990. From 1990 to 2004 seasonally employed with the State of Alaska, Division of Forestry, fighting wildfires, instructing public fire safety education programs, conducting fire investigations, enforcement and training. Has been an instructor at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks since 1974. Employed as Assistant Professor, Emergency Services Program, University of Alaska Fairbanks 8/07 6/08. Has a post-secondary teaching certificate and graduate of the National Fire Academy, Executive Fire Officer Program. Occasionally serves as an adjunct instructor for the academy. Has been a consultant for fire protection since 1980. Services include management assistance, training, fire investigation, engineering assistance, fire safety education, incident management systems, and fire prevention programs. Developed and present training program for Village Public Safety Officers at Alaska State Public Safety Academy, and deliver Basic Firefighter Course at rural Alaska communities. Serve as certifying officer for firefighter certification. Involved with the National Fire Prevention/ Education Teams since 1996 as team training cadre member and team leader. North Star Fire Service Area Commissioner 1983 to present. Past Chair, State of Alaska Fire Standards Council. Adjunct member of Alaska Type I National Incident Management Team 1987 to 2007. Bud instructors the Lynden Training Centers Methods of Instruction course, Incident Safety Officer, Incident Command System, and Incident Management System courses. Bud has been with the Lynden Training Center since 2002.

Fred Austin Associate Instructor

Fred has been working for Lynden over 40 years as a professional truck driver and pilot car operator. He has been an instructor for the Lynden Training Center since 2006. Fred brings his professional operator experience to the Lynden Training Center's equipment operator courses.
