Packaging
Packaging is one of the critical issues related to shipping seafood. Nothing will cause us all more grief than leakers. We realize most of you aren't operating packing lines and the problem has been under control in recent years but, it is a problem with far reaching consequences if it reappears. Air carrier general office people will make decisions that have a major impact on all of us if they perceive a leakage problem. Once decisions are made, it is nearly impossible to get them rescinded.

The major requirements of packing are as follows:

Use of any of the standard wetlock cartons
A 4 mil poly liner secured at the top either by tying or a cinch tie
Banding of the wetlocks with at least two bands if cod or salmon or other lighter weight seafood and at least 3 bands if halibut is being shipped

This packaging seems to prevent almost all instances of leakage. We keep a supply of wetlocks and 4 mil liners on hand to repack any damaged or leaking cartons that we find.
