Alaska Railbelt Marine provides reliable, regularly scheduled, weekly service between Seattle and Whittier, Alaska. The service was created to enhance the Alaska Railroad’s freight service to Southcentral Alaska. Alaska Railbelt Marine utilizes three new railbarges, which are equipped with rails so that railcars can roll on and roll off. The new barges are designed to provide faster, and more reliable service. The deck space is also used for break-bulk cargo and containers. Efficient intermodal service is available from origin to destination with containers or trailers, via truck or rail beyond Southcentral Alaska and the railbelt.
In the spring of 2002, the three railbarges will be fitted with a fixed racking system, which will provide additional container capacity. |
